The first fly fishing day of the year took place at the renowned Coltsford Mill in Surrey, providing members with a challenging but rewarding start to the season.
Fed by the River Eden, the fishery lived up to its reputation, with anglers enjoying some excellent sport despite far-from-ideal conditions. Three members managed to catch their full quota of two trout each, while one unlucky angler returned home empty-handed—no names mentioned... Andrew!
The trout were in excellent condition, reflecting the quality of the fishery, and it's safe to say most have now found their way onto the dinner table.
The weather, however, proved to be a real test. A howling gale combined with bitterly cold temperatures made casting a fly particularly difficult. As any fly angler knows, strong winds can quickly turn a pleasant day on the water into a battle of patience and technique. Nevertheless, the group persevered and made the most of the day, proving that determination often pays off.
As always the fishing was only part of the enjoyment. Members gathered for a packed lunch, catching up over plenty of good-natured conversation and laughter, making the outing as much about friendship as fishing.
With the first trip of the year successfully behind us, attention now turns to our next outing in April, when members will head to Chigborough Lakes near Maldon, Essex. Here's hoping for calmer weather, tight lines, and another enjoyable day on the water.
